The palette of browns

The palette of browns occupies a special place in Liaigre’s colour range. Its remarkable richness reflects both the extraordinary diversity of tones evocative of the earth and the materials that have always been central to Liaigre’s expressive language: wood, stone, bronze, leather, terracotta and lacquer.
These shades, at times subtle and at others contrasting, reveal an interplay between colour, materials and light, a relationship from which the Studio develops each project.
This palette should therefore be understood as a deliberate and deeply considered choice. Within this ‘grammar of browns’ lies a distinctive aesthetic vision, in which sensitivity and refinement find their rightful place.

The many shades of brown have always been a defining element of Liaigre’s visual language. Indeed, the narrative they evoke, one that brings together wood, leather, bronze, earth, landscape, time and patina, expresses, in part, the very essence of the Maison.

Deeply connected to nature, the earth, authenticity and permanence, Christian Liaigre made these values the foundations of his aesthetic. His world, restrained yet never austere, developed with a coherence that became a style, a signature. Browns therefore seem to tell the story of the Maison, while also providing a direct link between the spirit of its founder and Liaigre today.

At Liaigre, browns trace the contours of an emotional landscape. There are earthy browns, organic and sometimes almost mineral in character (burnt earth, sienna, tobacco, damp earth); the shades of wood (smoked oak, walnut, mahogany, ebony, charred wood); and brown leathers (Cognac, Tabac, Havane, Fauve, Camel, Chocolat), a palette connected to the equestrian world, which is part of the Maison’s DNA. There are also mineral browns and bronzes, as well as deep, almost black browns, shrouded in mystery (wenge, ebony, charred or smoked wood, lacquer).
Brown is thus treated as both a colour and a material. One might go a step further and say that, at Liaigre, colour is never truly separate from the material that carries or expresses it…

Before they are colours, browns are sensations: enveloping, enduring presences that create a gentle atmosphere and an immediately perceptible sense of comfort. This attention to how a space feels guides the Studio’s thinking as it approaches each domestic interior with the intention of creating a distinct atmosphere.
At Liaigre, colour rarely stems from a purely decorative intention. Above all, it is connected to the project and its setting, its wider context: geographical location, climate and light. In this way, colour, in this instance, the palette of browns, enters into a dialogue with its surroundings. The same shade will express itself differently in a city, by the sea or in the mountains, shaped by the light, the architecture, and the choice of materials and lines.
Far from being neutral, these earthy shades play with density and depth, highlighting textures and the way they catch or allow light to glide across their surfaces.

These shades of brown embody both a sense of permanence and a quiet modernity. Neither rustic nor nostalgic, this vibrant, warm palette expresses Liaigre’s vision of luxury: a simple, living and authentic luxury, felt rather than seen. It is an elegance poised between architectural rigour and sensory richness, underscored by a subtle dialogue between materials: patinated bronze and smoked oak, Havane leather and a light-toned wood…
Within this delicate relationship with the domestic environment, choosing brown, or a range of browns, is a way of inhabiting colour and material. It embodies a sense of harmony that runs like a guiding thread through every creative expression of Liaigre, from the design of an interior space to the creation of a piece of furniture, a light fitting or an accessory.
