Christian Liaigre’s aesthetic was profoundly shaped by the landscapes of his childhood. His approach to colour was never decorative; it was intuitive and deeply rooted in the atmosphere of a place. Rather than evoking the familiar clichés of seaside interiors, he distilled the essence of the Atlantic, from the French shores of Île de Ré to the coastal landscapes of Nantucket and the Hamptons.
The Atlantic is defined by shifting skies and a soft, diffused light that plays across the water, the sand and the granite rocks. Materials are gently weathered by wind, salt spray and the force of the sea. From this rugged beauty emerges a palette where light takes precedence over colour, a subtle composition of nuanced tones shaped by the landscape itself.
From wooded countryside and wild heathlands to sweeping dunes and granite outcrops, the Atlantic coastline unfolds as a landscape of quiet contrasts. Far removed from the brilliant whites and harsh light of the Mediterranean, its whites are softened and nuanced. Liaigre favours shell, chalk and washed linen tones, warm ecrus that gently deepen into beige, sand, wet sand and greige. Against this luminous backdrop, every shade of grey finds its place, from the silvery tones of water-worn pebbles to the muted skies before a storm, extending through blue slate and shimmering silver. This spectrum, ranging from pearl to anthracite, naturally gives way to blue. Liaigre’s blues are airy or profound, yet never overtly vivid. Echoing
the sky and the ocean, they evoke travel, contemplation and quiet reverie. They are joined by muted greens, sage, silvered and greyed greens, khakis, lichen and seaweed tones, that recall the coastal vegetation and windswept dune grasses. These, in turn, lead to rich browns inspired by seaweed, driftwood, smoked oak, tobacco leather and patinated bronze. Nantucket offers a compelling example. On this North Atlantic island, once renowned for its whaling industry, Christian Liaigre and the Studio embraced the island’s architectural heritage and local constraints. The understated character of its traditional timber houses, originally built for fishermen, naturally informed the project’s restrained aesthetic. Harmonies of white and pale wood are subtly enlivened by carefully placed accents of colour: a waxed fishing yellow and a vibrant vermilion red, recalling the island’s former whaling buildings, historically painted red to conceal the traces of their activity. Conceived as a refuge overlooking the sea, the
house places comfort above all else. It is surrounded by a landscape designed by Piet Oudolf, whose naturalistic planting blends so seamlessly with its setting that it appears to have always belonged there. This intuitive approach, guided as much by sensitivity as by an exceptional mastery of interior architecture, reveals the profound connection between Christian Liaigre and the Atlantic landscape. Returning to the origins of an aesthetic language that defined an era and continues to inspire Studio Liaigre today, one discovers that this deeply personal relationship with place, this intimate geography, ultimately gave rise to a distinctive and enduring style.
