Australia’s economic hub, Sydney is also the most populous city in the country and across Oceania, with over five million inhabitants. Blending historic buildings with contemporary architecture, exemplified by its iconic Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge overlooking the harbor, Sydney stands as a modern metropolis, a center for finance and technology. A key economic player in the Asia-Pacific region, the city has become one of the world’s leading hubs for high-end residential projects, known for its appreciation of exceptional architecture and design. Beyond its economic vitality, Sydney is defined by its spectacular natural environment. The city unfolds along iconic beaches, most notably Bondi Beach, an expansive natural harbor, and lush greenery, all bathed in a mild climate and exceptional light. Daily life is shared between professional pursuits and outdoor activities.
Looking back at Liaigre’s DNA and founding principles helps explain the connection between the Parisian studio and Australia. Since its creation by Christian Liaigre, the house has been deeply committed to authenticity, timelessness of style, and a restrained approach to decoration. It embodies a refined way of living, anchored in its time, yet free from ostentation. These qualities resonate strongly with an Australian and cosmopolitan clientele who recognize themselves in this understated elegance, defined by simplicity and discretion. This largely explains Liaigre’s success in Australia and the loyalty of its clients, as evidenced by remarkable projects carried out by Mathieson Architects in Sydney, such as the Kurraba residences penthouse and the Balmoral project. Local contemporary architecture favors wood, stone, raw concrete, and generous openings to the outdoors, as well as a clarity of space, an aesthetic approach rooted in quiet luxury, shared by Liaigre’s clients worldwide.
Designed by the Studio’s teams in Paris, the Sydney exhibition reflects the atmosphere of a city in perfect balance between urban energy and a more relaxed, coastal lifestyle. A versatile yet sophisticated aesthetic, expressed through noble materials and a palette inspired by nature in the city, notably through a nuanced range of greens. The exhibition presents a fragment of a residential project, staging the main reception areas within a generous space: an entrance, a living room/library, and a dining room.
The teams have drawn from the house’s repertoire of iconic pieces, including classics such as the Pantaleria sofa, Spencer armchairs, Latin daybed, Opium armchair, Colonie table, Parchemin consoles, Phocée table, Bartholoméo desk, Sud bench, Robinson chairs, and Kalae coffee table. It also features recent creations, such as the Cambon chairs from the Costes x Liaigre capsule collection, the Bloc bookcase by Dominique Perrault and Gaëlle Lauriot-Prévost, as well as the Oedo lamp and Sélène floor lamp (both part of the 2025–2026 collection). This selection reflects Liaigre’s distinctive aesthetic language: a preference for clean lines, fluid spaces, generous proportions, and a form of luxury expressed subtly through detail, along with a unique approach that prioritizes comfort and a lifestyle in harmony with its time.
