Let it snow...

How does one express the spirit of the mountain and the chalets that reside among its slopes, or more generally the mountain refuge, from a perspective of modernity? To answer that question, Studio Liaigre was able to find text to reflect these places and their contexts, with vocabulary that is true to the essence of the Liaigre style.

It all starts with a thoughtful approach and perception of the landscape… Forming a sensitive bond to the natural environment before each project develops within the studio. The creative proposal produced by the team is a response to a situation, its topography, vegetation within the landscape, light, tones and horizon line…
This first thought is enriched by questioning the relationship between exterior and interior spaces and the way the landscape is brought into the different rooms of the house. Examining the way in which the openings of the interior environment multiply the points of view to the exterior is an essential part of the process. Finally, comes the choice of materials and colors that echo the landscape and reinforce the unique character of the project.

In the mountains, chromatic palettes reflect the variations of the landscape: snow and the deep white of winter or natural summer shades of mineral and sylvan…
The mountain house is seen as a refuge, a protective cocoon against a climate that is sometimes hostile or more often harsh and contrasting.
Whether it is a holiday resort or a permanent residence, the house in the mountains (chalet, farm or contemporary house) must offer contemporary comfort and affirm an identity based on local traditions. In this, the project delivered by Liaigre in the Swiss ski resort of Saint-Moritz is exemplary.

This village nestled at an altitude of 1,822 meters at the foot of the Alps in the canton of Graubünden, renowned for the beauty of its landscapes and its sunshine; is a haven of luxury and sport. St. Moritz is one of the oldest winter sports resorts in Europe. In a grandiose setting, Liaigre signed the complete refurbishment of a house on the heights of the village. Intended for a sport-loving family that cultivates an elegant and relaxed lifestyle, this house, built in the 1950s and 60s, has become a model of luxury and simplicity.
