Liaigre in India, elective affinities

Starting on September 25, Liaigre will settle for a month in one of the spaces of the Aequo gallery in Mumbai to present some of its finest creations in dialogue with Indian culture and lifestyle.

The Parisian House of Creation has already designed the interiors of a contemporary palace in Delhi and is currently working on residential projects in both Mumbai and Delhi, but this exhibition, curated by the Studio Liaigre, marks a first on Indian soil.

More than a showcase, the exhibition offers an immersion into Liaigre’s art of living and creative universe through a scenography that places furniture, lighting, and decorative objects within a domestic atmosphere. Conceived as a bridge between two cultures drawn to one another, the exhibition addresses both a clientele already familiar with the Maison and a new audience of design enthusiasts accustomed to visiting ID MUMBAI, the design week held this year from September 26 to 28.

This new exhibition follows the one organized this summer in the Hamptons, which brought Liaigre’s style to the East Coast of the United States.

A few years ago, the extraordinary interior design of a contemporary palace in Delhi revealed the deep affinities between the values underpinning the Liaigre style and Indian culture. Guided by the principle of adapting to geographical, cultural, and climatic contexts that shapes every project, this dialogue underscored a mutual respect for craftsmanship and savoir-faire, as well as a shared pursuit of beauty. Between reverence for tradition and a sense of grandeur, this remarkable design project expressed the perfect balance between integration into Indian culture and modernity.

Internationally, Liaigre is recognized as a Parisian house of creation whose grounding in the history of French decorative arts is one of its greatest strengths. Yet the Studio’s aesthetic vocabulary has constantly evolved, enriched by projects carried out across continents and encounters with diverse techniques and crafts. The Liaigre style thrives on these exchanges, nourished by an openness driven by an ongoing reflection on an art of living that is both elegant and contemporary.

To convey the spirit of Liaigre and reflect its universe, the Studio has designed an exhibition showcasing iconic pieces from its collections, including the Saint-Germain armchair, the Nagato stool in natural oak, the Craie table combining a wooden top with a ceramic base, the Naja coffee table, the Bronze Trépied side table, the Basse Terre and Augustin sofas, and the Médicis sconce in black patinated brass. The exhibition also features new creations: the Sienne lamp, a ceramic piece designed in collaboration with Karen Swami, the Don sconce in bronze, the Emae wall candle holder in bronze and stone, and the Mezzo lamp in glass and bronze. Upholstery fabrics for the sofas and armchairs embrace warm tones; yellow, bronze, mustard, alongside greens and ochres, a palette inspired by Indian culture.

The story of Liaigre began in Paris 40 years ago. Its founder, Christian Liaigre, laid the foundations and wrote the first chapters. In the mid-1980s, there were few real alternatives between contemporary design and traditional cabinetmaking, which often nostalgically perpetuated styles inspired by classical furniture. Inspired by the great French decorators of the 1920s, Christian Liaigre reconnected with noble materials: wood, bronze, lacquer, and the excellence of craftsmanship associated with this prestigious history of French style, putting them at the service of a contemporary vision of interior design. Unmoved by fleeting trends, he developed a

pared-down aesthetic defined by restraint, simplicity, and elegance that immediately appealed to a clientele in search of modernity. The Liaigre style is expressed through the use of noble and natural materials, harmonious proportions conceived for everyday comfort, refined colors, and subtle details, sometimes barely perceptible, that make all the difference. Through its interiors, furniture, lighting, and home accessories, Studio Liaigre has profoundly renewed the codes of luxury: a refined yet understated luxury founded on the ideal of a warm and generous art of living.
